My great grandfather James Cole Hadley and my great grandmother Rosanna Bennett were married at Lower Gornal on October 16, 1870.  I can find quite a bit of information about the two of them on line and also other connected family members, but I have never been able to find out who James'  parents and, if any, siblings were.  I know about Rosanna's parents and siblings.  I know James was born at Eve Hill, Dudley, Worcestershire on May 26, 1852 and that he followed the profession of a coal miner.

BENNETT I am chasing Great Grandfather Samuel Bennett, whose birth is listed as about 1843/4 in all the census 1901 back to 1871 as Gornal.  Then by 1861 I cannot find him for sure.  He could be one of three I see in 1861 census at Ancestry.com (or maybe I have not found the right possibility yet).  First, Samuel born 1845 Sedgley grandson of Hannah Bennett living at 76 Lak (spelling?) Lane Lower Gornal.  Second, Samuel born 1846 at Red Hall Son of Henry and Ellen living at 94 North St Barro(e?)n Meadow Lower Gornal. Third, Samuel born 1843 Rowley Regis son of Absolom (Abraham?) and Eliza living at 135 Rowley V******.  Rowley Regis is a bit far from Gornal perhaps but 'third' is the right age. 'First' is almost right age and in right place.  'Second' seems a bit young but is in right place and 4 of his 5 siblings have same names as my Samuel's kids (Occam's Razor suggests he is the best bet...but...).  I Know for certain my Samuel Bennett married Sarah Ann Bry(i)an in 1868 - I have their family Bible.  I would like to hear from anyone who can claim FOR CERTAIN any of the above three Samuel Bennetts married to someone who is not Sarah Ann so I can nar John Bennett Contact Researcher

BROCAS (BROCKHOUSE)

The earliest info. that we have is a marriage of Thomas Brocas and Sarah Hill 5 Feb 1753 both of this Parish.

There is a daughter Mary born in 1754 and then ours another Thomas 11 Jun 1756 - son of Sarah and Thomas Brocas of Woodsetton.

Thomas Sen. died while the children were very young and the mother and children were removed to Rugeley. We know this as there are diaries in the Shrewsbury library written by Thomas Jun.

We have never been able to find any poor law records of the area and wonder if you know of any existing please.

Young Thomas became a wealthy China and Cheese merchant in Shrewsbury and also a Methodist preacher. On one of his preaching circuits in Jan 1787 he says that he stayed with cousin John Hickman at Gornal Wood near the cemetery so I have sent a couple of emails to Hickman on your list also.

I am researching my family line of Fiddler/Fidler. My earliest ancestors are Benjamin Fiddler (b1770) and his wife Frances Cox (1772). Benjamin is my gggg g/f.
Their first four children – James (1793), Thomas (1794), Susannah (1797), and Elizabeth (1802) were born in Sedgley and the rest of the children were born in Dudley.
Strangely, Benjamin and Frances married in Ealing, Middx in August 1791.
I don't know Benjamin's profession, but of his male children, John (1799) was a miner and Benjamin (1807) was an office clerk.
Any information on Benjamin’s family much appreciated. Frances was the daughter of Benjamin Cox (b1743) and granddaughter of Richard Cox (b1715).

GANDERTON

I am looking into the family GANDERTON, who lived in Sedgley during the 1740s to 1780s. The information I already have is as follows:

Francis Ganderton (b) 1752 in Sedgley son of John & Hannah Ganderton. Hannah died in Sedgley in 1776.

I would like some help to fill in the gaps: John Ganderton’s birth and Hannah’s maiden name and any family information. I don’t know whether the Gandertons were long term residents in Sedgley as they did seem to move around a lot.

Also, I am looking for any information on Mary DAVIES who was born in Sedgely in 1779.

HAYES My 3xGt-Grandfather, William Chetwin Hayes and his wife Maria/Mary Briggs/Biggs, lived in Whitechapel, London during the 1841 census. William was a gunmaker, and died before census day 1851, and he and his wife, had married in Bloomsbury, London in 1829. But William had been baptised at Sedgley in November, 1799, the son of William and Sarah Hayes.

According to family tradition, William had been related to a 'Baron Hayes'. Although unable to find one for the period in question, there was a Baronet Chetwynd, and his son Henry Chetwynd was married in 1827, to Mary Ann Petitt, daughter of John Hayes Petitt; and granddaughter of John Louis Petitt, who had an estate in Sedgley.

The use of the middle name 'Hayes' in the Petitt family, seems to have originated in 1727, when John Peter Petitt [ father of John Louis ] married Sarah / Mary Hayes at Wolverhampton.

Returning to William Chetwin [ baptised Chetwynd ] Hayes. His grandson born in 1868, was given the name Henry Chetwin Hayes, presumably named after the son of the Baronet, whom Mary Ann Petitt had married. I would be grateful to hear from anyone who may be able to shed light on all this confused mess.

HUGHES I am trying to trace my gt gt gt grandmother Lydia Hughes born c1841 in Princes End, Sedgley (according to several census records).    I have tried all of the varioius register offices in the area but they have been unable to find the entry and provide a birth certificate.

I know that Lydia’s parents were called Thomas Moore and Eliza (possibly Hide or Keeling).

Lydia had the following siblings :

Jabez born 10 October 1834, christened 14 Nov 1834 Wesleyan, Wednesbury, Stafford
Eliza christened 26 Feb 1837 Coseley in Sedgley, Stafford
Martha christened 31 Dec 1843 Tipton, Stafford
John christened 27 Jan 1846 Tipton, Stafford
James christened 24 Jul 1849 Tipton Stafford

I have managed to find records for these people on FamilySearch but not for Lydia.

Is it possible PLEASE that anyone who might have access to church records for these areas could check the above details for me to see if they can find Lydia and to establish the mother’s maiden name.

HUGHES Hughes 17th to 19th centuries.
I am researching the Hughes branch of my family. My paternal grandmother, Dorothy Hughes, was from Coventry but her grandfather Isaac Hughes was born in Sedgley in Feb 1841. I think - but I am not sure - that he was descended from Thomas HUGHES and Margaret Pawton who m. in Sedgley in 1696. So that Hughes line seems firmly established in Sedgley for generations.

HYDE

I am researching my great-grandmother, Jane Hyde, born about 1848 in Sedgley.  Her father was Samual Hyde, 'a contractor' according to her marriage certificate; s he married John Cooke (my great-grandfather) on 21 March 1869, at St Luke's Church, Cannock and had 13 children (!), including my grandfather, James Seymour Cooke.

Additional information : I have made some progress, and found Jane Hyde's birth certificate, which shows she was born at Ellowes, Lower Gornall, Sedgley.  However, there were lots of Hydes in Sedgely, and I have not been able to find any further information on this particular family.

HYDE I am trying to trace the parents of John Hyde, born in Ettingshall about 1817 (+/- a year). From his marriage record to Jane Lane in 1845 I know that the father is shown as J Hyde, deceased, but I cannot confirm any possible birth or baptism record. Sue Hyde Contact Researcher
